Discover hundreds of new road and traffic datasets

      Released: 19 Apr 2021 by landgate_admin

This article was originally published on 13 Jun 2019 by The Data WA Team

Since 2016, and in line with the State’s Whole of Government Open Data Policy, Main Roads has published high-quality road and traffic data on its Open Data, Maps and Apps portal.  Provided under a Creative Commons Attribution licence, this data is available in modern machine-readable formats and API web services.

The DataWA team are excited to announce that hundreds of new datasets are now discoverable through data.wa.gov.au, and a new harvesting process deployed by the team will result in updates made by Main Roads being discoverable within 24 hours through the State data portal.

Some of the new transport datasets available can be used to service a wide range of requirements and inspired several apps including:

      • Roadworks: Here you’ll find programmed roadworks data, including information like estimated completion date and traffic impact.
      • Incidents: Live and up-to-date information on road conditions, closures and other incidents that may affect road use.
      • Road Stopping Places: Western Australia is as big as it is beautiful, so you can never have too many travel guides – Roadside stopping places are strategically placed along the road network to encourage travellers to take regular breaks on long journeys and appreciate the natural wonders of our state.
      • Historic Traffic Data: Traffic data from previous years to determine the consistency and dependability of travel time on the road network across the Perth metropolitan area.

And there’s still more data to be released - an upcoming dataset will include real time traffic data from signalised intersections and traffic counts collected across the state. This data can currently be viewed on the Main Roads’ trafficmap.

If there is any additional transport, road, or traffic data that you would like to see made available, please get in touch with the team at Main Roads via gis@mainroads.wa.gov.au.
